Flash..so far.

I've found flash thus far to be adequate for making more basic types of games, which is what I expected when coming into this gaming 1 class. That's not to say that it isn't effective at what its meant to do. There are many great games and animations made every day using nothing but flash. The limitations I personally find myself running into are mostly due to the fact that I'm not an artist in any sense of the word. For the purposes of this class flash seems to be very effective.

Sound

I found this assignment to be a good base of understanding how sound works in flash, but the method used seems to be a little limiting. I believe the best method might be to cut your own sound files to your preferred length and then add them that way. Sound is an important, but sometimes overlooked factor in game play. It greatly helps immerse the player into the experience they're having. Some of the best examples of this are game in the action horror genre. There could be nothing going on at all on screen, but you're still on edge just due to the music playing increasing your expectation that something is about to happen.

Flash Animation

I'd say that the coolest thing about learning to animate using flash is that you can put a surprising level of detail into your animations. I suspected the detail involved in flash animation to be very limited, but the most limiting factor seems to be the amount of time you're willing to put into each animation.

This youtube video is an example of some of the animation that could be used in flash. It has a decent amount of detail combined with humor.

The Prototype

I finished my paper prototype recently and I found it extremely helpful to have my entire game idea layed out in front of me. I now have a pretty good idea on how I want the game to perform. I also have a general idea for how I plan to design  things involved.

Imagining the game

As begin to think more and more about the game I'm going to be making, I find myself getting most excited about just learning how to do these things in flash itself. I'm just most interested in the coding and design used by flash.

Games on downtime

I do play multiple games on my free time. I play games like Fallout 3 or Mass Effect. Those games are both great games if for no other reason they're very immersive. I've also been playing World of Warcraft on and off for a while. It can be fun due to the fact that you play with tons of people at a time. Gears of War 2 is another that I've been enjoying as of late. It's just a fun game all around.

Mini Game

I didn't find it very difficult at all. Directions on the page are layed out pretty well and the examples are helpful. I was able to take what was shown and add things like more carrots flying onto the screen at different speeds. The best part was probably just learning some new things and beginning to think of how I can expand upon those. I wouldn't say that there was a bad part at all, this was a pretty good assignment.
